What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a personalized therapy program that helps improve how the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue work together. These muscles play a vital role in breathing, chewing, swallowing, speaking, and how the teeth and jaws develop.

Many people develop habits like mouth breathing from incorrect tongue posture, or inefficient swallowing without realizing it. Thumb sucking, pacifier use and over processed food changes the tongue posture and swallow pattern. Over time, these patterns can contribute to issues like:

  • feeding challenges

  • sleep disturbed breathing (sleep apnea/UARS)

  • long narrow facial growth,

  • jaw discomfort,

  • speech challenges

  • difficulty breathing through the nose

Myofunctional therapy focuses on correcting these patterns at their source.

Therapy involves gentle, guided exercises and habit retraining designed to create healthy muscle function and proper oral rest posture. It is non-invasive and customized to each individual’s needs.

Goals of Myofunctional Therapy

The primary goals of orofacial myofunctional therapy are to:

  • Establish proper tongue posture at rest

  • Encourage nasal (nose) breathing

  • Improve chewing and swallowing patterns

  • Balance the muscles of the face and jaw

  • Support healthy oral and facial development

  • Create long-term, stable results for dental and airway health

Benefits of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy can benefit both children and adults. Some potential benefits include:

  • Improved breathing and airflow

  • Better sleep quality and reduced snoring

  • Support for orthodontic treatment and long-term stability

  • Reduced mouth breathing and dry mouth

  • Improved jaw comfort and muscle balance

  • Support for speech clarity and function

  • Increased awareness of healthy oral habits

OMT is often used alongside care from dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, sleep specialists, and other healthcare providers to support whole-body wellness.
